Overview
The Kedarkantha Trek is a classic winter trek nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, near the small village of Sankri. It offers a magical journey through dense forests of oak and pine, open meadows, and snow-covered ridges, culminating in the summit of Kedarkantha Peak at 3,583 meters (11,755 feet).
This trek is especially popular during the winter months from December to April, when the trail is blanketed in snow, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland. It’s ideal for beginners and families who want a safe but beautiful introduction to snow trekking.
The route passes through charming villages, frozen streams, and quiet forests where you can spot birds and sometimes mountain wildlife. The final ascent to Kedarkantha Peak rewards trekkers with spectacular views of the snow-clad Himalayan ranges and valleys below.
The trek takes about 5 days, allowing for gradual acclimatization and a relaxed pace suitable for most fitness levels. Proper winter gear and warm clothing are essential to enjoy the crisp mountain air and chilly nights.
Overall, the Kedarkantha Trek is a wonderful winter adventure that combines natural beauty, cultural experiences, and the thrill of trekking on snow, making it a favorite among both new and experienced trekkers.
Itinerary
On the first day of the Kedarkantha trek, you will travel from Dehradun to Sankri, the base village for the trek. You will start your journey from Dehradun in the morning. The drive to Sankri takes approximately 8 to 10 hours, covering a distance of around 200 kilometres (124 miles). The route passes through scenic landscapes, winding mountain roads, and quaint villages nestled in the Himalayas.
Upon reaching Sankri, you can take some time to explore the village and prepare for the trekking adventure ahead. Sankri offers basic accommodation options such as guesthouses and small hotels where you can rest and acclimatize to the higher altitude.
It is important to rest well and get used to the mountain air before starting the trek. Use this time to organize your trekking gear, check your supplies, and mentally prepare for the exciting days to come.
On the second day, you will begin your trek from Sankri to Juda Ka Talab, a beautiful high-altitude meadow and frozen pond nestled among pine and oak forests.
The trek starts with a gentle walk through dense forests, following a small stream and passing traditional mountain huts. The trail gradually climbs, allowing you to enjoy fresh mountain air and stunning views of the surrounding peaks.
The distance covered today is moderate, taking around 4 to 5 hours depending on your pace. Along the way, you will see various Himalayan plants and might spot some local wildlife.
Upon reaching Juda Ka Talab, you will set up camp near the frozen pond. This peaceful spot is perfect for resting and enjoying the natural beauty.
It is important to stay hydrated and pace yourself, as the altitude begins to increase. The temperature can be quite cold, especially in the early morning and evening, so dress in layers to stay warm.
On the third day, you will trek from Juda Ka Talab to the Kedarkantha Base Camp, which lies at the foot of the Kedarkantha Peak. This part of the trek involves a gradual climb through open meadows and forests, offering breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
The trail will take around 5 to 6 hours to complete, depending on your pace. Along the way, you’ll notice the landscape becoming more alpine, with fewer trees and more rocky terrain as you gain altitude.
You’ll camp overnight near the base of the peak, where you can rest and prepare for the summit climb early the next morning. The base camp offers stunning views and is a perfect place to experience the quiet beauty of the mountains.
Make sure to keep your energy up with good meals and plenty of water, and dress warmly as temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
Today is the most exciting and challenging day of the Kedarkantha Trek—reaching the summit of Kedarkantha Peak at 3,583 meters (11,755 feet). You will start very early in the morning, often before sunrise, to make the most of the cool and stable weather. The climb to the summit involves a steady but sometimes steep ascent through snow-covered trails, rocky paths, and open ridges.
As you climb higher, the views become more spectacular. From the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree panoramas of the Himalayan range, including peaks like Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch.
After spending some time at the summit, you will carefully descend back to the base camp. The descent takes less time but requires careful footing.
At base camp, you can rest, enjoy a warm meal, and celebrate your achievement with your trekking group. The evening is perfect for sharing stories and soaking in the peaceful mountain atmosphere.
On the final day of your Kedarkantha Trek, you will descend from the base camp back to Sankri, retracing the trail through the peaceful forests and meadows. The trek down usually takes around 4 to 5 hours, with mostly downhill walking.
Once you reach Sankri, you can freshen up and prepare for the journey back. From Sankri, a vehicle will take you back to Dehradun, where your trek concludes. The drive typically takes around 8 to 10 hours depending on road conditions.
This day is a time to reflect on the incredible experience, the beautiful landscapes, and the sense of accomplishment from conquering Kedarkantha Peak.

Both are great treks, but it depends on when you want to go and what kind of experience you’re looking for. Kedarkantha is best for a winter snow trek (December to April) with forest trails, snowfall, and easy access from Dehradun. It’s perfect for beginners. On the other hand, Sar Pass Trek is ideal for summer (May to early July) and offers more varied terrain—forests, meadows, snowfields, and an exciting snow slide. It’s slightly longer and has a bit more challenge, making it great for those who want to level up after Kedarkantha.
