Overview

The Do Dham Yatra is a sacred journey that takes pilgrims to the holy towns of Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimages in India, attracting thousands of devotees each year.

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Delhi to Guptkashi/Phata, where the adventure begins. Kedarnath, home to the Kedarnath Temple, is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. The trek to Kedarnath is challenging but offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and landscapes. The sacred Kedarnath Temple stands at an altitude of 3,580 meters (11,710 feet) and is the focal point of the pilgrimage.

After Kedarnath, the journey continues to Badrinath, where the Badrinath Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is located. Surrounded by the majestic snow-capped peaks, Badrinath is a serene and spiritual retreat. The Yatra ends with a return drive from Badrinath to Delhi, completing this transformative journey.

Over six days, the Do Dham Yatra follows a well-paced route, beginning in Haridwar and covering Guptkashi, Kedarnath, Rudraprayag, and Badrinath. Pilgrims will experience Ganga Aarti in Haridwar, witness the divine aura at Kedarnath, and receive blessings in the sacred premises of Badrinath. This journey is curated to ensure spiritual fulfillment, safety, and comfort in the lap of the Himalayas.

The Do Dham Yatra is ideal for pilgrims looking to experience the sacredness, natural beauty, and spiritual significance of these two holy sites.

Itinerary

Day 0: Departure from Delhi to Guptkashi

Your Do Dham Yatra begins in Delhi, the capital city of India. After arriving at the designated meeting point, you will be greeted by the tour representatives and fellow travelers. You’ll receive a brief overview of the Do Dham Yatra and the schedule for the next few days.  The journey, covering approximately 450 to 500 kilometers, takes about 10 to 12 hours depending on the route. Along the way, we will stop for breakfast in Rishikesh and  then proceed toward the beautiful confluence town of Devprayag, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers merge to form the holy Ganga. Upon reaching Guptkashi/Phata, you’ll check into a hotel for an overnight stay. This is the perfect opportunity to rest and acclimatize before your trek to Kedarnath.

Day 1: Reach Guptkashi/Phata

Upon arrival at Guptkashi or Phata, you will settle into your hotel for the night. This will be your accommodation base before the trek to Kedarnath. These towns have a calm and spiritual feel, perfect to relax before the next day’s trek. The peaceful ambiance and gentle mountain breeze create the right setting for mental and physical preparation. You can visit the Guptkashi Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, or just enjoy the local vibe, interact with fellow pilgrims, or take a quiet stroll nearby. The fresh mountain air and quiet surroundings make it a great place to rest. Enjoy your dinner and get a good night’s sleep for the next day’s important trek.

Day 2: Trek to Kedarnath

Today marks the beginning of your spiritual and physical journey to the Kedarnath Temple. After an early breakfast, drive to Gaurikund, the starting point of the Kedarnath trek. The journey from Guptkashi to Gaurikund takes about 1–1.5 hours by car. Once at Gaurikund, you begin the 16-kilometre trek to Kedarnath, which is both physically challenging and spiritually fulfilling.
The trek is well-paved, but expect a steep ascent with moderate to high altitude gain as you make your way up the mountainside. The trail is dotted with small tea stalls and resting points where you can take breaks. The scenic beauty is spectacular, with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, rivers, waterfalls, and dense forests. As you ascend, you’ll pass through picturesque villages, along with sounds of local chants, adding a spiritual element to the journey.
After reaching Kedarnath by evening, you’ll check into your accommodation near the Kedarnath Temple. Visit the temple to offer your prayers and attend the evening Aarti (ritual prayer ceremony). The experience of being at the temple at dusk, surrounded by the majestic mountains, is truly unforgettable. Overnight stay in Kedarnath, where you can soak in the serene and spiritual ambiance of the area.

Day 3: Kedarnath to Phata/Guptkashi

Wake up early for a morning darshan (prayer offering) at the Kedarnath Temple. After your visit, enjoy a hearty breakfast before beginning your return trek to Gaurikund. The 16-kilometre descent is comparatively easier than the ascent, but it still requires care as the downhill path can be slippery and steep in certain areas.
As you make your way down, take in the breathtaking views of the valley and the majestic Kedarnath range that you may have missed during the ascent. The return journey gives you a fresh perspective of the terrain, with lush meadows, flowing rivers, and the distant sound of temple bells.
Upon reaching Gaurikund, you’ll be transferred back to Guptkashi or Phata by vehicle for your overnight stay. After a day of descent and physical exertion, enjoy a relaxing evening, followed by a well-deserved dinner and rest. Overnight stay in Guptkashi or Phata.

Day 4: Guptkashi/Phata to Badrinath

On this day, you will continue your spiritual journey by heading towards Badrinath. After breakfast, your vehicle will take you from Phata to Badrinath, a distance of approximately 6-7 hours. The drive is filled with stunning views of the mountains and valleys.
Upon reaching Badrinath, you will check into your accommodation. Later, visit the famous Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is set in the beautiful valley between the Nar and Narayan mountains. Offer your prayers at the temple and experience the divine atmosphere. In the evening, you can explore the town of Badrinath, stroll along the Tapt Kund (hot springs), and take in the serenity of the surroundings. Your overnight stay in Badrinath will be arranged at a local guesthouse or hotel.

Day 5: Joshimath to Rishikesh

On Day 5, after a delicious breakfast, we’ll leave Joshimath and begin our drive to Rishikesh, which will be the final part of our trek. As we move away from Joshimath’s peaceful environment, we’ll head toward Rishikesh, a city known for its spiritual vibe and stunning landscapes. The journey will be scenic, giving us time to relax and think back on our trip. Once we reach Rishikesh, we’ll take some time to explore the city if we have enough time. We’ll visit the peaceful banks of the Ganges River, where we can sit and enjoy the calm surroundings. If we have enough time, we can also walk around the local markets to pick up souvenirs or visit some of the ashrams in the area. However, if we’re running short on time, we’ll head directly to Delhi to stay on schedule for the rest of our journey.

Day 6: Reach Delhi

On Day 6, we will continue our overnight journey to Delhi. While this will be mostly a travel night, we’ll aim to reach Delhi the following morning, completing the trek and reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve had. It will be a peaceful end to our adventure, with memories of the beautiful landscapes, spiritual moments, and camaraderie of the journey.

FAQs

1. What is the Do Dham Yatra?

Do Dham Yatra is a spiritual journey to two sacred Hindu temples in Uttarakhand – Kedarnath (dedicated to Lord Shiva) and Badrinath (dedicated to Lord Vishnu). It’s a shorter version of the Char Dham Yatra and is ideal for those who want a meaningful pilgrimage in fewer days.

2. How many days are enough for the Do Dham Yatra?

well-planned Do Dham Yatra takes 6 to 7 days. This duration includes travel from Delhi or Haridwar, temple visits, local sightseeing, and return journey. However, the number of days can vary depending on weather, road conditions, and your starting point.

3. What is the best time to do the Do Dham Yatra?

The best time is from May to June and September to mid-November. The weather is pleasant, and the roads are usually open. Avoid July and August due to heavy rainfall and landslide risks.

4. Is registration required for the Do Dham Yatra?

Yes. The Uttarakhand Government has made yatra registration mandatory. It can be done online or at the registration counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh, and other check posts. Carry a valid ID proof for the same.

5. Can senior citizens or kids go on the Do Dham Yatra?

Yes, but with precautions. Senior citizens must consult their doctor before traveling. Kids above 5 can go if they are healthy, but it’s advised to avoid long treks for very young children and elderly with serious health conditions.

6. Can I visit all Char Dham in a single trip?

Yes, you can. Many pilgrims choose to do the full Char Dham Yatra in one journey, which includes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. However, this trip usually takes 10 to 12 days, depending on weather and travel speed. If you have limited time or are looking for a shorter spiritual journey, the Do Dham Yatra (Kedarnath and Badrinath) is a great alternative.
